Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) prices in China have roughly doubled over the past year, turning a once low-margin commodity into one of the tightest links in the global battery supply chain. The rise gathered pace from the fourth quarter of 2025 and has continued through the first half of 2026, pushed by strong downstream demand and climbing raw material costs.

By late June 2026, the market price for a 400 kg bag of lithium iron phosphate has passed 25,000 yuan, roughly double the level recorded a year earlier. Energy storage grade material that traded near 30,000 yuan per ton in mid 2025 reached close to 60,000 yuan per ton by early 2026, and cathode makers have continued to raise quotations since then.

Demand has not cooled despite the higher prices. Exports of new energy vehicles and energy storage systems remain strong, and energy storage shipments grew more than 120 percent year on year in the first quarter of 2026. Several producers report order books filled into the second half of the year. As a result, the usual delivery cycle for lithium iron phosphate has shortened from about 10 days to roughly 7 days, a clear sign of tight supply.

Rising raw material costs explain much of the increase. Lithium iron phosphate is made mainly from iron phosphate, lithium carbonate and glucose, with iron phosphate accounting for close to a third of total raw material cost. Battery grade lithium carbonate in China hit a two and a half year high near 200,000 yuan per ton in mid May 2026 before easing. By 22 June 2026 it traded around 169,000 yuan per ton, recovering from a near two month low as buyers rebuilt inventory. Higher oil prices tied to the conflict in the Middle East have also lifted the relative appeal of electric vehicles and supported battery demand.

Producers are responding by locking in upstream supply and adding capacity. Chemical group Wanhua Chemical has moved quickly into battery materials. The company recently released the draft environmental review for a new plant in Binzhou, Shandong, that would produce 70,000 tons a year of battery grade lithium carbonate at a purity above 99.5 percent. The project company was registered on 5 June 2026 with capital of 510 million yuan and forms part of a larger battery material park agreed with the Binzhou government in December 2025. The step marks the shift of that park from planning into physical construction.

Wanhua has also strengthened its battery units, with combined capital increases above 3.7 billion yuan across two platforms, and is lifting lithium iron phosphate output from 50,000 to 120,000 tons a year. A separate 100,000 ton LFP line in the Yantai area is due to start up around the middle of 2026. Other phosphorus chemical groups such as Xingfa Group and Yuntianhua are making similar moves, using their phosphate rock resources to enter the cathode market.

The price strength is reshaping the sector. Integrated players that control phosphate rock and lithium feedstock are gaining ground, while smaller cathode makers face thinner margins after the lithium battery export tax rebate was cut to 9 percent on 1 April 2026. Battery cell makers and downstream electric vehicle and energy storage manufacturers around the world are absorbing the higher input costs. Analysts expect the tight balance to last into the fourth quarter of 2026 as new battery capacity comes online.

💡 Alternative Solution

Integrated upstream supply through phosphate rock and lithium feedstock control, capacity expansion by major producers, long-term supply contracts with battery makers, diversification toward sodium-ion and alternative chemistries, expanded battery recycling, and inventory hedging ahead of peak energy storage demand
